Picking a dumpster size is the one decision that trips up most Vancouver homeowners before a project even starts. Go too small and you're paying for a second haul; go too big and you're renting air and losing driveway space you didn't need to give up. After years of dropping roll-offs across Clark County — from the older tree-lined streets near Uptown Village to newer builds out toward Salmon Creek and Ridgefield — we've learned that the right size almost always comes down to two things: how much material you'll actually generate, and how heavy that material is.
This guide walks you through the four sizes we run — 10, 15, 20 and 30 yard — with real dimensions, what each one holds in pickup-truck loads, honest weight limits, and the kinds of Vancouver projects each one fits. How Dumpster Sizes Actually Work
The "yard" in a dumpster size refers to cubic yards of volume, not the length of the bin. A 20-yard dumpster holds 20 cubic yards of material. A handy way to picture a cubic yard is a cube three feet on every side — roughly the load of a standard full-size pickup truck bed, heaped. So a 10-yard dumpster is about ten pickup loads, a 20-yard is about twenty, and so on.
But volume is only half the story. Every roll-off has a weight limit included in the flat rate, usually expressed in tons. Fill a big bin with something dense — concrete, dirt, wet Pacific Northwest yard debris, roofing shingles — and you'll blow past that limit long before the box looks full. That's why heavy material and big boxes rarely mix. More on that below.
Rule of thumb we give every Vancouver caller: size for volume on light, bulky debris (furniture, drywall, cardboard, brush), and size down for anything heavy (concrete, dirt, shingles, tile). When in doubt, go one size up on bulky junk and one size down on dense debris.

The 10-Yard Dumpster: Small Jobs and Heavy Debris
The 10-yard is our most misunderstood bin. It looks small — about 12 feet long and only chest-high — but it's the workhorse for two very different situations: light, tidy projects, and anything heavy.
Ideal Vancouver projects
A single bathroom remodel is the textbook 10-yard job. Tear out a tub, vanity, tile and old drywall in a Hazel Dell or Felida home and you'll fill roughly a third of a full-size pickup several times over — well within a 10-yarder. It's also perfect for a small garage or closet cleanout, or hauling off the debris from a modest fence replacement.
Most importantly, the 10-yard is the bin we send for concrete, brick, dirt and other heavy debris. If you're demolishing an old patio slab or a section of driveway, you'll hit the weight limit fast — which is exactly why you want the smaller box. The 15-Yard Dumpster: The In-Between Sweet Spot
The 15-yard splits the difference and it's a favorite for older Vancouver neighborhoods where driveways are short and narrow. It carries meaningfully more than a 10 without the longer footprint of a 20, so it tucks into tight spaces near the Grand Central and Rose Village areas without eating your whole driveway.

The 20-Yard Dumpster: The Vancouver All-Rounder
If we had to recommend one size unseen, it'd be the 20-yard. It handles the widest range of common Clark County home projects, and the walls are low enough to load heavy items over the side rather than only through the back door.

Roofing tear-offs are a classic 20-yard job — a typical single-layer re-roof on a Vancouver rambler produces a lot of shingle weight, and the 20 gives you room while keeping the load haulable (we'll advise on tonnage since shingles are dense). It's also the go-to for a large yard or tree cleanup, which is no small thing here: our wet PNW winters drop branches and bring down limbs, and spring pruning of big Doug firs and maples fills a bin quickly. The 30-Yard Dumpster: Big Cleanouts and New Construction
The 30-yard is our largest standard roll-off and it's built for volume. At six feet tall it holds nine to twelve pickup loads, so it's reserved for projects that genuinely produce a mountain of light, bulky material.
Ideal Vancouver projects
A whole-home cleanout — clearing an entire house after an estate settlement or a big move — is where the 30 earns its keep. It's also the standard for new construction and major remodels, large additions, and full demolition of a shed, garage or deck. If your project is producing framing lumber, siding, drywall and general construction scrap by the truckload, the 30 keeps you from ordering swap-outs. A Note on Vancouver's Older Driveways
Plenty of homes in Vancouver's established neighborhoods — around Hough, Carter Park, Shumway and Uptown — have shorter, narrower driveways than newer subdivisions. A 30-yard box is 22 feet long, and once you account for our truck needing clearance to drop and retrieve it, that footprint can be a real squeeze. If your driveway is tight, a 15 or 20-yard often fits better while still holding plenty. Tell us about your space when you call and we'll match the bin to your driveway, not just your debris.
How to Avoid Renting the Wrong Size
The two most common mistakes we see are opposite errors. Renting too big wastes money and driveway space — you pay for capacity you never use. Renting too small is worse: you fill it, then wait for a swap-out or a second delivery, stalling your project and often costing more than if you'd sized up in the first place. And overfilling a bin past the fill line is never a fix — loads have to sit level with the top rail to be legally and safely hauled.
The safe play: for bulky household junk and construction scrap, round up. For heavy debris, round down and mind the tonnage. And when you're genuinely unsure, describe the project to us — we've sized thousands of Clark County jobs and we'd rather get it right the first time than send a truck back.
